Mindful Thanksgiving

I'm not here to tell you not to eat pie. Because pie is delicious. Unless you're more of a cake girl. Then you do you.

But I am here to give you a few tips for how to navigate this traditional meal of 'stuffing yourself' without, well, stuffing yourself. 5 handy tips and tools to use to keep yourself sane and not stuffed this turkey day.

1. Eat a healthy, light meal before your big Thanksgiving dinner. Even a big green smoothie will do (I like this one). Having a little bit in your tummy before hitting the buffet line will *hopefully* keep you from overdoing it.

2. Designate a 'safe person'. If you get anxious around certain family members and tend to stress eat (like most of us), find a safe person you can stick with and confide in. It can be a trusted cousin or your mom or even a friend you can text on your bathroom break! Just having someone to say 'hey, I'm stressed, I don't wanna overeat' can do wonders.

3. Don't let anyone else fill up your plate. Well-meaning family members will jump at the chance to help out a mama with her hands full of little ones or her belly full of a growing baby. But you know what's best for your body and you know how much food you want and need. You need to be the one to fill up your plate. Not Aunt Kathy.

4. Use your salad plate as your main dinner plate. If your meal comes with multiple plates for multiple courses, keep your smaller salad plate and use it to fill up with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. The smaller circumference will force you to keep your portions smaller and if you're still hungry, you can always go back for more.

5. If you don't like something, don't eat it. Don't feel bad about turning your nose up to turkey or grandma's green bean casserole. If you don't like it, you do not have to eat it. You aren't going to hurt anyone's feelings. And if someone says anything just say 'oh, I'm saving it for my next plate!' No one will notice if you never go back for seconds (or you can take a nibble from your husband's plate and say 'mmmm' BOOM. Done.)
