The Beach House School Room

as soon as brad told me about the dining room in our beach house (he went and toured a hundred places without me and picked this little slice of perfection himself) i knew exactly what it would be used for. not that we don't eat; cause we definitely do. the kitchen has this nice big bar that we can easily pull up a few bar stools & a high chair to enjoy breakfast and snacks. the yard is where the real dining happens. we stopped by ikea on our way in and grabbed a big table and chairs and we've had a blast enjoying our dinners outside in the california sunshine.

but i digress. the 'dining room' of the house is a little area off the kitchen that leads to the backyard (aka concreteland). it has a huge window that lets in an incredible light and a set of floor-to-ceiling cabinets tucked in the corner a little separate from the rest of the kitchen. it's all open to the kitchen and when i finally laid eyes on it i knew that it would be the school room.

we're still going back and forth about kindergarten and beyond, but brad and i are in agreement that charlotte will have preschool at home. without going in to too much detail and background on that decision (don't worry, it'll come in a later post ... or 5), i wanted to jump right in and share some photos of how we've turned this dining room in to a school room.

each morning, without prompting, the kids ask for some work to do and get down to it. it's hard to get them to finish their breakfast before diving in to some worksheets or letter tracing or drawing patterns on the chalkboard or breaking out the watercolors. their love for learning and exploring knowledge astounds me and it's incredible to be able to sip my coffee at the kitchen counter and watch it all unfold.

in the months and years to come, this space will change a bit. as they grow older, become interested in different things, etc. but this will be the school room. the place where learning happens. regardless of how long we continue to have our children at home for schooling, we'll keep this space. i'm a firm believer that every child needs a space where they can learn in a welcoming environment. paints and coloring tools and chalk and flashcards all readily available for everyday use. books upon books (william's love for words rivals my own) upon books, and a home-base (our little white table) to let it all happen.

more formal 'lessons' will begin here soon, and from what i've already witnessed, it's going to be a magical time.
